What's checked

What an MOT actually covers

An MOT is a minimum legal safety and emissions standard — not a service. The tester checks that, on the day, the car is safe to be on the road. They're looking for the point at which something becomes a failure, which is why cars often pass with items you'd still want sorted soon.

  • Brakes — performance, balance, pad and disc condition, handbrake.
  • Tyres & wheels — tread depth (1.6mm minimum), damage, size and type.
  • Steering & suspension — play, wear, leaks, ball joints, bushes, springs, dampers.
  • Lights & electrics — every lamp, alignment of the headlights, horn, battery security.
  • Body, structure & corrosion — rust within 30cm of anything structural is a fail.
  • Exhaust & emissions — noise, leaks, smoke and a full emissions test.
  • Visibility — windscreen damage, wipers, washers, mirrors.
  • Seatbelts, seats, doors, warning lights, number plates, VIN.

How results are graded

Since 2018 every defect gets one of four grades. Knowing which is which tells you what you can and can't do next:

  • Dangerous Immediate risk. Fail. The car must not be driven until it's fixed — not even to another garage.
  • Major Affects safety or the environment. Fail. Must be repaired before it can pass.
  • Minor No significant safety effect. Pass, but noted on the certificate — fix it soon.
  • Advisory Not a defect yet, but heading that way. Pass. Recorded so you know what's coming.

If it fails

We'll text you an itemised quote with photos of every failed item. Approve what you want us to do — the whole list, or just the fails — and we'll repair it and retest it free of charge. Most fails are back on the road the same or next day. You can also spread the bill with Payment Assist.

Not sure what a fail or advisory means? Ask Lois — she'll explain every item on your certificate in plain English, free.

Your MOT result, explained by an expert

Paste the text from your certificate or the gov.uk MOT history page, or take a photo of it. Lois grades every item, tells you whether you can drive, what the repair usually involves, and what to ask for.

Advisory: "Offside rear brake disc worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened". Do I need to do anything?
Lois · PDL MOT expert
Advisory You passed, so nothing is required today. The tester's saying the rear-right disc is getting thin or scored — it usually goes with worn pads. It'll likely become a fail by next year, so plan a brake check in the next few months. We do those free and quote before doing anything.
MOT questions

Things people ask us every week

How early can I book my MOT?

Up to a month (minus a day) before your current certificate expires. Pass inside that window and the new certificate still runs from your old expiry date, so you don't lose any days. Check your expiry date on gov.uk.

Can I drive my car if it fails?

If there's a dangerous defect — no, it must not be driven until repaired. If it's only major defects and your old certificate is still in date, you can drive it but you're legally responsible for it being roadworthy. If your old certificate has expired, you may only drive to a pre-booked repair appointment or retest. Driving without a valid MOT can mean a £1,000 fine, and with a dangerous defect up to £2,500 and points.

How much is a retest?

Free, if we do the repairs — we sort the retest as part of the job. If you have the repairs done elsewhere and bring the car back within 10 working days, a partial retest is £10.

What's an advisory?

Something the tester saw that isn't a fail yet but will need attention — worn tyres, light corrosion, a small leak. It's recorded on your certificate and your online MOT history. You don't have to fix it to pass, but it's usually a fail next year. Lois can tell you how urgent yours is.

Do I need to bring anything?

Just the car and the keys. We look everything up from the registration. If you're leaving it with us, let us know how to reach you — we'll text your result and any quote.

Do you do taxi tests too?

Yes. We're a Gloucester City Council approved taxi testing centre and can do the compliance test in the same visit as your MOT. Taxi test details.
